What Is Shingles?

Shingles is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you had chickenpox, the virus stayed dormant in your nerve tissue for years. Later in life, it can reactivate due to age, stress, or a weakened immune system, causing shingles.

Key facts:

  • Affects one side of the body only
  • Follows a nerve path, forming a band-like rash
  • Pain often starts 3–5 days before the rash
  • Rash lasts 2–4 weeks, even with treatment
  • Pain may continue after healing (postherpetic neuralgia)

Anyone who’s had chickenpox can get shingles. It’s more common after 50, but younger adults can be affected too.

Symptoms of Shingles

How do you know it’s shingles? Look for these signs:

Early Signs (Before the Rash):

  • Burning or stinging pain on one side of the body
  • Tingling or itching in one specific area
  • Skin sensitivity – even light touch hurts
  • Mild fever and feeling tired

The Rash Appears (After a Few Days):

  • Red patches on one side only (never crosses the midline)
  • Fluid-filled blisters that burst and crust over
  • Pain ranges from mild to severe
  • Location: Most common on the torso, but can appear anywhere

Key Point: Treatment works best within 72 hours of the rash appearing. See us quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How soon should I start shingles treatment?
Start within 72 hours of the rash appearing. Early antivirals work best, reducing pain, shortening recovery, and lowering the risk of long-term nerve damage.

  2. How long does shingles last?
With treatment: 2–3 weeks. Without treatment: 3–4 weeks. Pain may continue after the rash heals, a condition called postherpetic neuralgia.

  3. Do I need the shingles vaccine?
It’s recommended if you’re over 50. The vaccine lowers the risk of shingles by around 90% and makes symptoms milder if you do get it. Ask our team for guidance.

  4. How long does the rash last?
With antivirals: 2–3 weeks. Without antivirals: 3–4 weeks. Crusting is usually visible from day 7–21. Pain may persist after the rash clears (postherpetic neuralgia).

  5. Do you offer private shingles treatment in Manchester?
Yes. Private treatment is available if you’re not eligible for NHS care.

I use this pharmacy regularly and every time the service is friendly, polite and efficient. The interior is well laid-out, well stocked, bright, modern and functional. It has everything one would expect or hope for in a pharmacy. Well done, team. Keep up the good work.

A really helpful local pharmacy. They offer a free delivery service, which makes getting prescriptions more accessible. The staff are always friendly, helpful and professional, and the pharmacy itself is clean, tidy and has plenty of seating if you need to wait. It’s only been in the neighbourhood for about a year, so not everyone knows about it yet, but I’d definitely recommend giving it a try – you won’t be disappointed.
