Painful periods should not be something you simply put up with every month.
At Higher Crumpsall Pharmacy, we provide fast, private period pain treatment in Manchester. Same-day appointments available. No long GP waits. No referral needed. Get the help you need, close to home.
What Is Period Pain?
Period pain, medically known as dysmenorrhea, is cramping pain in the lower abdomen that occurs before or during a menstrual period.
For some women, it is mild and manageable. For others, the pain is severe enough to disrupt daily life, work, and relationships for several days each month. Either way, you deserve proper care and support.
There are two types. Primary dysmenorrhea is common period pain caused by the normal menstrual process. Secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by an underlying condition such as endometriosis or fibroids. Identifying which type you have is the key to finding the right treatment.
Signs & Symptoms of Period Pain
You may be experiencing period pain or menstrual dysfunction if you notice:
- Cramping or throbbing pain in the lower abdomen
- Pain that radiates to the lower back or thighs
- Pain that begins 1 to 2 days before your period
- Nausea or vomiting during your period
- Headaches or dizziness
- Diarrhea or loose stools during menstruation
- Periods that are unusually heavy, irregular, or absent
- Pelvic pain between periods
If any of these are affecting your quality of life, a proper assessment can make a real difference.

Our period pain service in Manchester is open to all women, including:
- Women experiencing painful or severely cramping periods
- Women with irregular, heavy, or absent periods
- Women who suspect they may have endometriosis or PCOS

You do not need a diagnosis to book. If your periods are affecting your daily life, that is reason enough.
Causes of Period Pain
Period pain can have straightforward causes or signal something that needs closer attention.
Common physical causes include:
- Natural uterine contractions during menstruation
- Endometriosis – tissue growing outside the womb
- Uterine fibroids or polyps
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Hormonal imbalances
- An intrauterine device (IUD)
Lifestyle and other contributing factors include:
- Stress and anxiety
- Smoking
- Being under 30 years old
- Heavy or prolonged periods
- Family history of painful periods
Understanding the cause is the first step. Our team will help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the best pain relief for period pain?
Over-the-counter options like ibuprofen or paracetamol are effective for most women. Ibuprofen works particularly well because it reduces the prostaglandins that cause cramping. For more severe pain, stronger prescription options such as mefenamic acid may be needed. Our team will advise on the most suitable option during your consultation. - Can a pharmacy help with period pain in Manchester?
Yes. Our trained clinicians can assess your symptoms, recommend pain relief, advise on hormonal options, and refer you to a specialist if needed. - How do I know if my period pain is abnormal?
If your pain is severe enough to affect your daily life, work, or sleep, or if it is getting worse over time, it is worth getting assessed. Pain that does not improve with standard pain relief is also a sign that something else may be going on. - Can lifestyle changes help with period pain?
Yes. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, stress reduction, and quitting smoking can all help reduce period pain. We will discuss practical lifestyle advice alongside any treatment we recommend. - Is the service confidential?
Completely. Everything discussed during your consultation stays private. We will not contact your GP without your consent unless it is clinically necessary.

I use this pharmacy regularly and every time the service is friendly, polite and efficient. The interior is well laid-out, well stocked, bright, modern and functional. It has everything one would expect or hope for in a pharmacy. Well done, team. Keep up the good work.

A really helpful local pharmacy. They offer a free delivery service, which makes getting prescriptions more accessible. The staff are always friendly, helpful and professional, and the pharmacy itself is clean, tidy and has plenty of seating if you need to wait. It’s only been in the neighbourhood for about a year, so not everyone knows about it yet, but I’d definitely recommend giving it a try – you won’t be disappointed.
