When Did Pharmacy First Start?

The NHS Pharmacy First Service officially launched in England on 31st January 2024 as part of a national initiative to improve access to healthcare and reduce pressure on GP surgeries.

The service builds on the successful delivery of minor ailments schemes in some parts of the UK and expands the role of community pharmacists. It allows trained pharmacists to supply prescription-only medicines, including antibiotics and antivirals (where appropriate), without the need for a GP appointment.

What Is Pharmacy First?

  • Pharmacy First is an NHS service that allows community pharmacists to assess, treat and prescribe medications for minor health concerns — saving you time and helping ease pressure on local GP surgeries.

Our qualified pharmacists can offer clinical assessments, advice, and where appropriate, NHS prescriptions for certain conditions, without needing a GP referral.

Conditions We Can Treat Through Pharmacy First:

We can help with the following seven common conditions:

  • Earache (aged 1 to 17 years)

  • Sore Throat (aged 5 years and over)

  • Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)

  • Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)

  • Infected Insect Bites (aged 1 year and over)

  • Shingles (aged 18 years and over)

  • Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Earache (Otis Media)

A common middle ear infection, often causing ear pain, pressure, and temporary hearing loss. It’s especially common in children and may follow a cold or flu.

Sore Throat

Can be caused by viral or bacterial infections and often comes with pain, redness, or difficulty swallowing. We can help you manage symptoms and advise if further treatment is needed.

Sinusitis

Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses, often caused by infections or allergies. It can lead to facial pain, pressure, nasal congestion, and headaches.

Impetigo

A contagious skin infection causing red sores or blisters that can burst and form a yellow crust. Common in children and easily treated with the right care.

Infected Insect Bites

Insect bites can become infected, leading to redness, swelling, pain, or pus. Prompt treatment helps prevent complications. Visit us for advice and suitable treatment options.

Shingles

A painful rash caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. It can cause burning, tingling, or blistering. Early treatment helps reduce symptoms and complications.

UTIs

A common infection causing pain or burning when urinating, frequent urges to go, and lower abdominal discomfort. Quick treatment can relieve symptoms and prevent complications.
