How Do People Catch the Flu?
Flu (influenza) is a contagious virus that spreads easily from person to person, especially during the colder months. You can catch the flu in several ways:
Airborne droplets: When someone with the flu coughs, sneezes, or talks, they release tiny droplets into the air. Breathing in these droplets can spread the virus.
Touching contaminated surfaces: The flu virus can live on surfaces like door handles, phones, and countertops. If you touch a contaminated surface and then touch your face, especially your mouth, nose, or eyes, you can become infected.
Close contact: Being in close contact with someone who has the flu — for example, hugging, shaking hands, or sharing utensils — increases your risk of catching it.
Because the flu spreads so easily and often before symptoms appear, getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself and those around you.
