Earwax Removal

What Is Earwax Build-Up?

Earwax is normal. It protects the ear canal and usually clears on its own.

Sometimes wax builds up and causes a blockage. This can lead to reduced hearing, a feeling of fullness, discomfort, itching or ringing in the ear.

Not every blocked ear is caused by wax, which is why we always check the ear before any removal. Pain, discharge, sudden hearing loss, dizziness, recent ear surgery or signs of infection may need your GP, NHS 111 or a specialist rather than routine wax removal.

Symptoms of Blocked Ears

Earwax build-up can cause:

  1. Muffled or reduced hearing
  2. A blocked or full feeling in the ear
  3. Ear discomfort
  4. Itching inside the ear
  5. Ringing or buzzing (tinnitus)

These symptoms do not prove that wax is the cause, so checking the ear matters before any treatment.

Who Can Use This Service?

Our private ear care service is for adults, including:

  1. Adults with blocked or muffled ears
  2. Hearing aid users who need their ears checked or cleared
  3. Anyone who wants to know whether wax is causing their symptoms
  4. People who would prefer a quick local appointment

Please do not book routine wax removal if you have severe ear pain, discharge, sudden hearing loss, significant dizziness or a suspected ear infection. Contact your GP, NHS 111 or urgent care instead.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Softening drops, such as olive oil drops, may be recommended for a few days before some earwax appointments. Do not put anything deep into the ear canal and avoid cotton buds, as they can push wax further in.

If you are unsure whether to use drops, or you have a history of ear surgery or a perforated eardrum, contact us before your appointment.

No. We check your ears first and will only remove wax where it is safe to do so. If another route is more appropriate, we will explain why.

5.  Can you remove wax if my ear is painful or leaking fluid?

Pain or discharge can be a sign of infection or another problem. We may not be able to remove wax safely and may advise you to see your GP, call NHS 111 or use another clinical route.
